ICAN is proud to sign on to a letter from more than 40 civil society organizations and representatives sent to United Nations Secretary-General Antonió Guterres concerning his recent report (A/71/858) on strengthening the capabilities of the UN to assist Member States in implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The report prioritizes reforming the United Nations system to better play a leading role in the prevention of conflict and promotion of sustainable, inclusive peace, including enhancing the capability of the UN system to counter-terrorism and prevent violent extremism.

The purpose of the letter is to point out areas where the report falls short, particularly relating to the role of civil society and the protection of human rights. The letter also offers four steps that could be taken to address the gaps in the report.
